Subject: RE: About Pz IV

Have you found machine guns yet?

These MPeGs are nice. It looks like the data plate might still be in place
there in front of the driver?! Can you tell me the tank's chassis number
(in German: "Fahrgestell Nummer")?

"Effort", yes :-)

OK -- great

Interesting

Yes -- good picture. My colleague Rudi Schoeters and I have been working on
a book about surviving Pz. IV's and variants. Can we obtain permission to
publish this photo in our book?

you can

It looks like a big piece of steel has been attached around/below the re
coil guard. Do you know what that is?

These photos are of great interest -- are you the photographer?

Yes, the three sections with the title "??????? - ????????? ??", correct?
More good photos. So these were taken April 22, 2001? It seems that some
were taken while the tank was still in the display hall and some in the
maintenance building, no? So it was moved on April 22? Are you in the
photos? Who are the pretty 'tank girls'?

My best guess:

"Attention! Turn the starter only when motor is enabled"

In other words: Make sure the ignition is turned on before cranking the
engine over. I'll check with Rudi to be sure as his German is much better
than mine.

It appears to be a maintenance schedule. We will need Rudi's skills since
so many of the letters are unreadable. I'll let you know soon.

Good question

That is unfortunate as a replacement will be almost impossible to find. I
noticed that the control panel seems to be missing also...unless perhaps it
is in storage waiting to be put back in.

Probably...though, believe it or not, the Germans had many commercial
arrangements with private US industry -- such as Ford, for example. I have
heard that US Strategic bombing plans took into account US commercial
interests and thus certain towns or factories were 'overlooked'.

Yes, it could be difficult to adjust the timing. Hopefully we will find
help for you in this area.

I have the first package of Pz. IV technical manuals ready to mail to you.
There are hundreds of pages -- too much to scan and e-mail. Please send me
the postal address you want me to use.

will soon

If the data with serial number still exists it would be nice to have a
close-up photo of that. But any and all photos are of interest...epecially
interior and progress photos.

I will ask around about the ignition candles (called "spark plugs" here in
the US). I have several contacts that have worked on this same engine, so
I'm sure we can find a solution. This first packet of manuals will not have
much information about the engine and gearbox, but soon I will have more
and will send you copies as they become available.

I would love to see your Russian-Language Pz. III manual -- will you mail
to me a copy?

P.S. Я вчера купил могучий шприц для промывки-заливки, правда неплохо бы к нему ещё что-то типа наконечника сделать....
