Venezuela: Chavez Says U.S. Blocks Warplane Sale
New York Times
January 11, 2006

President Hugo Chavez accused the United States of blocking a sale of Brazilian military training planes to his government and said
he could turn to China instead to purchase warplanes. Brazil needs United States approval for the sale because the aircraft use
American technology. "We'll wait to see if Brazil solves the problem," Mr. Chavez told officers at a military academy. "If not, then
China also makes training planes, warplanes and bombers."
A spokesman for the American Embassy in Caracas and an official at
the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer declined to comment. (REUTERS)

Russian Defence Ministry denies plans to sell MiG fighters to Venezuela

Excerpt from report by Russian news agency Interfax-AVN website

Moscow, 11 January: The Defence Ministry has not made any official statements to the effect that Russia is willing to supply MiG-29
fighters to Venezuela, Col Vyacheslav Sedov, Russian Defence Ministry press service chief, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday
[11 January].

"The Defence Ministry does not deal with signing contracts to supply weapons and military hardware abroad. These functions are vested in a state intermediary, the Rosoboroneksport federal state unitary
enterprise," Sedov said, commenting on media reports that the Russian Defence Ministry was willing to supply Venezuela with MiG-29 fighters.

"The issue of supplying Russian combat aircraft to Venezuela is currently not on the agenda," Sedov said.
