When defeat of Polish forces became obvious, the government left the country, and collapse of the Polish statehood became evident - on 17 September USSR troops crossed the border and occupied eastern part of Poland - according to the agreed with Germany (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) "zone of USSR interest" in Poland - covering the territories mostly populated by Ukrainians and Byelorussians. The last operational unit of the Polish Army capitulated on 6 October. A portion of Polish troops evacuated to neighbouring Romania and Hungary. Polish troops continued to fight as part of Allied Forces and the Red Army till the end of the war( fight the Axis powers throughout the war ).
