The last operational unit of the Polish Army capitulated on 6 October. A portion of Polish troops evacuated to neighbouring Romania and Hungary. Judging that the Polish defences had collapsed and Poland had ceased to exist as a state, on 17 September the Soviet government ordered the Red Army to occupy eastern areas of Poland. The move was made in accordance with an earlier Soviet-German (Molotov-Ribbentrop) agreement providing for a "zone of Soviet interests" in the part of Poland mostly inhabited by Byelorussians and Ukrainians.
The last unit of the Polish Army surrendered to the Germans on 6 October 1939.
Some Polish troops escaped through Romania and Hungary to France. They continued to fight together with the Western Allies until the end of the war. Others fought against the Germans alongside the Red Army.
