Man charged with giving secrets to an enemy due in London court¤
LONDON (AP) _ A former army interpreter alleged to have disclosed British national security secrets to an enemy state faced a court appearance Wednesday, prosecution officials said.
Daniel James, 44, is charged with an offense under the Official Secrets Act. Prosecutors allege that on Nov. 2 he "communicated to another person information calculated to be directly or indirectly useful to the enemy."
Security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly disclose details, said the charge referred to alleged communications with Iran.
James, a corporal in the British Army, had acted as translator for Gen. David Richards, the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Defense Ministry officials said.
A hearing last week was mostly held in closed session after Senior District Judge Timothy Workman said details of the case posed a "possible prejudice to national security."
James, who was being held in custody, was arrested on Dec. 18, police said.
