>The Air Force recently placed an order for 10 additional C-17 Block 18 aircraft with funds appropriated in the FY 2007 Defense Appropriations Act. The contract is valued at $10 billion and the aircraft will be constructed at the Boeing Company’s Long Beach, CA facility. Despite the findings of the recent Mobility Capabilities Study, which declared that 180 C-17s were sufficient for the airlift mission, recent statements by individual such as Air Force Reserve Chief Lt. Gen. John Bradley have indicated that additional lift assets would be welcomed within the fleet. At a recent Washington DC policy breakfast, Bradley stated that, “I worry about not having as many tails when we go to war…Frankly, more airplanes would be helpful.”
