Russia looks to bolster air defence
James C O'Halloran Editor, Jane's Land-Based Air Defence
London
Russia is developing a new air-defence system that can engage air-breathing targets and space defence (anti-satellite) assets, First Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov revealed on 27 February.
The announcement about this 'fifth-generation' air-defence system - described "as a unique project incorporating new technologies and innovations" - could be a response to either China's launch of its anti-satellite capable missile or simply a countermeasure to the US ballistic missile defence deployments expected in the Czech Republic and Poland.
Talking to Russian media, Ivanov confirmed that air-defence system maker Almaz/Antei was forming a design bureau to work on the fifth-generation system.
Western defence analysts are aware of discussions about the development of an S-500 system that was allegedly based on the 9K82/9K83 ('Giant' and 'Gladiator') surface-to-air missile and also about a longer-range weapon system - possibly the S-1000. The S-500 was reported to have been cancelled (or shelved) due to a lack of technology and funding to complete the system. However, it is possible that the S-500 programme could have been restarted under a new system designator, using modern computers and technology and driven by the desire to compete with both the Chinese and US defence systems.
The Almaz/Antei S-400 Triumf (SA-20) and Antei-2500 systems are now complete. However, the company is believed to be planning longer-range air-defence missile systems. In response to this, the US is already working on SEAD (suppression of enemy air defences) missiles with ranges of up to 1,127 km.
Meanwhile, Russia has declared a new missile testing range for long-range weapons near the northern town of Verkuta.
