HMS Tireless, a hunter-killer Trafalgar Class submarine, was taking part in a joint U.K. and U.S. exercise under the ice cap when the incident happened. The vessel has a nuclear reactor but doesn't carry nuclear weapons.
``The submarine was never in any danger, its nuclear reactor was unaffected, it quickly surfaced and is completely safe,'' the ministry said in an emailed statement. One other sailor was injured and is expected to make a full recovery, the ministry said.
The accident is thought to have involved a malfunction in a piece of air-purification equipment in the front section of the submarine and caused ``superficial'' damage, the ministry said.
