Jordan moves to buy Pantsir-S1
Jane's has learned that a complete Russian Pantsir-S1 short-range air-defence system is currently being field tested in Jordan and that the kingdom is set to place an order, James C O'Halloran.
The move comes as Mikhail Dmitriev, head of the Russia Federation for Military-Technical Co-operation with Foreign States, recently revealed that Russia has given Jordan a loan to buy military hardware.
The Pantsir-S1 is a highly mobile gun/missile system that uses the 30 mm 2A72 cannon with up to 1,400 rounds of ready-use ammunition. The missiles employed on the system are either 9M335s or 57E6s and come in packs of four or six mounted either side of the main turret.
If the sale goes ahead it will not be the first time the system has been sold in the region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a USD734 million contract in 2000 for the development and delivery of 50 Pantsir-S1 systems.
Under the terms of that contract, system development was to last two years and within three years all 50 systems were to have been shipped to the UAE in three consignments. Of the 50 systems, 26 were to be on a wheeled chassis and 14 tracked. Initial deliveries were reported to have begun in 2006, although Jane's has been unable to confirm the quantity or schedule.
