"Home Defense Antiaircraft (Heimat-Flak) and Alarm Antiaircraft (Alarm-Flak) Units
When the barrage batteries were phased out in 1942/43, it was decided to replace them with two types of auxiliary batteries that would make no demands on the critical manpower shortages of the Flak arm. The Heimat-Flak batteries were located adjacent to factories in Germany, Austria and German-occupied Poland. Each had a small military cadre to train and supervise the civilian factory worker crews, who would man the guns on the sounding of the air raid warning. The Alarm-Flak batteries, on the other hand, were manned by active duty personnel from all branches of the armed forces and were situated at supply depots, airfields and other installations in the Reich and the occupied territories. When the air raid alarm sounded, the men would stop their normal duties and rush to the guns. The number of these two types of batteries increased rapidly from 1943 to the end of the war."
