In other words, the whole HG had 849,000 men on strength on 1 June, which includes all men on leave and wounded expected to return within 8 weeks. Its units (minor, brigades and divisions) had 644,396 men according to the same measure, the difference being all sorts of non-combat elements attached to foprmations above the divisional level. Of these, only 486,493 were present and fit for duty on that date. Of these again, 316,200 were members of combat units (ie, the combat elements of divisions, brigades etc), and of these, 236,772 were actually deployed in the frontline or immediately behind it in a combat capacity or manning weapons directly supporting the infantry
