KOLSKY PENINSULA, RUSSIAN FEDERATION, 1-FEB-1999: This file picture dated February 1999 shows a Russian sailor working in the torpedo compartment of a Russian nuclear-powered submarine of the "Oscar" class in the Russian North Fleet base on the Kolsky peninsula. A Kursk submarine of the same class was forced to land on the seabed of the Barents Sea at a depth of around 100 meters (330 feet) because of technical trouble threatening the crew's oxygen supply. According to Russian NTV television the bow section of the submarine is flooded with water because of a leak in a torpedo launcher. The Kursk shut down the main nuclear reactor propelling its engines, cutting of electricity supplies which could leave the crew of about 120 sailors without oxygen. The head of the Russian navy, Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, said that the situation onboard the submarine was "serious." [Photo by Epa Files, copyright 2000 by AFP and ClariNet]
