France and Algeria are in advanced talks on the sale of up to four FREMM multirole frigates to the Algerian Navy, according to a Paris-based newsletter Maghreb Confidential , citing sources in Algiers.
An industry source in Paris with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that talks, which began with President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Algiers in early December 2007, were indeed under way and making progress.
However, FREMM constructor DCNS said it had no comment to make on the reports, which stated that officials from DCNS, the French defence procurement agency (Délégation Générale pour l'Armement) and a senior French naval aide met with the authorities in Algiers in early February.
Algeria has asked DCNS to submit its offer for the frigates by the end of March at the latest. The export version of FREMM is thought to be worth EUR400 million (USD594 million).
The only foreign buyer of FREMM so far has been Morocco, which indicated on 24 October 2007 that it wished to acquire one of the vessels. However, that deal has yet to be finalised.
Jane's has learned independently that Greece could also be on the point of ordering FREMM and that an agreement could be sealed as early as April.
The French Navy has ordered a first batch of eight FREMMs, with deliveries to start in 2012.
The first Moroccan FREMM, if that sale is confirmed, would come out of the original French batch. In all France has ordered 17 of the 5,800-ton vessels and Italy 10.
