Dassault denies reports of Algerian interest in Rafales
Gerrard Cowan JDIN Jane's Industry Reporter
London
Dassault has had no contact with the Algerian government regarding a possible sale of Rafale fighter aircraft, a spokesperson for the company has told Jane's .
Russian state media cited unnamed experts as suggesting the North African state could turn to the French company in the wake of its reported decision to return Russian MiG aircraft delivered in 2006-07. However, the Dassault spokesperson told Jane's : "We know nothing about that except what we read in the media. We have no contact with the Algerian government."
Russia and Algeria signed a defence systems package worth USD7.5 billion during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Algeria in March 2006. The deal included the purchase of various types of Russian-made aircraft: 28 Sukhoi Su-30MKA and 34 MiG-29 multirole fighters (specifically 28 single-seat MiG-29SMTs and six two-seat MiG-29UBTs); 16 Yak-130 advanced jet trainers; plus other defence equipment.
However, after receiving two MiG-29UBT aircraft from Russia and reportedly finding them to be second-hand rather than new and of low technical quality, Algeria suspended the delivery of the entire MiG family. On 11 February 2008 Algeria put delivery of the rest of the Russian package on hold until all problems were resolved.
Jane's contacted the Algerian government for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
COMMENT
By Craig Caffrey, Jane's aviation analyst
Bilateral military co-operation between Russia and Algeria will almost certainly remain steady. This is partly because the March 2006 agreement saw Russia pledge to sign off Algeria's debt to Moscow, dating from the Soviet Union era and worth USD4.7 billion, if the deal went ahead.
