Pakistan to buy Chinese J-10 fighters

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plans to acquire 36 J-10 multirole fighter aircraft from China by 2010, chief of air staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed has revealed.
According to state media on 19 November, ACM Ahmed said that the aircraft - which will be known as the FC-20 in Pakistan service - had been selected after "hectic and lengthy deliberations". The value of the deal is estimated to be around USD1.5 billion.
ACM Ahmed also said that the "engine of the aircraft would be manufactured by Russia", which suggests that the same engine that powered the pre-production J-10s - the Salyut AL-31FN turbofan engine - would be installed.
The announcement by ACM Ahmed is the first indication from either side that negotiations on the sale of the Chengdu-manufactured J-10 to Pakistan have been completed. Pakistan's cabinet gave initial clearance for the PAF to begin talks about the sale in April 2006.
ACM Ahmed said that he expected the first squadron of indigenously manufactured JF-17 fighter aircraft to be inducted into the Pakistan Air Force fleet in the first quarter of 2009.
The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) in Kamra started production of the Chengdu-developed aircraft in January this year, leading to the acquisition of up to 250 units.
In addition to the procurement of these Chinese aircraft, the PAF has also ordered 18 F-16 Block 50/52 aircraft - comprising 12 single-seat C variants and six two-seat D variants - and is also upgrading up to 46 of its fleet of older F-16A/B aircraft with funds from the United States.
