В конце июня 1941 года из Осло по железной дороге через Швецию в Финляндию прибыла германская
163-я пехотная дивизия под командованием генерал-лейтенанта Энгельбрехта. Первоначально дивизию
хотели использовать для захвата Ханко, но позже один ее полк направили в район Саллы, а остальные
силы - в Карелию на помощь VII армейскому корпусу.
Севернее ( К.И. - чем группа СС Норд) на Саллу должна была наступать 169-я германская пехотная дивизия, прибывшая в порты Ботнического залива из Германии.
в составе наступающей с финской территории армии <Норвегия> находился 211-й танковый батальон,
состоявший из 52 легких танков <Гочкис> H-35 и средних <Сомуа> S-35.

SS-Kampgruppe Nord was formed on 28 February 1941 for security of the
Murmansk Road in Finnish Lappland from available troops in the area. These
initially included the 6. and 7. SS-Infanterie Regiments,
a reconnaissance battalion, and two batteries of artillery stationed in the
High Arctic for security purposes. The 9. SS-Infanterie Regiment was also
in the area, but was relegated to coastal defense
duties, and not available for incorporation into the Kampfgruppe.
On 6 June it was ordered to the Rovaniemi area of Finland for expansion into
a Brigade and participation in the upcoming invasion of the Soviet Union.
The Kampfgruppe had only recently concentrated near
Kirkenes and had to march the length of the Arctic Ocean Highway from
Kirkenes on the Arctic Ocean to Rovaniemi not far from the Baltic Sea.
By 10 June its forward elements had reached their destination
with other elements of the new brigade arriving over the next week or so.
Elements began moving towards the Soviet frontier near Salla on 17 June along
the single road allocated to Nord.
Demelhuber was not impressed with Nord's readiness for combat and excerpts
from his report to Generalleutenant Fige, commander of XXXVI. Armeekorps are
presented below:
