Какие бодрые казахстанские разведчики
Добрый день!
в Австрии арестованы два офицера местной полиции, как предполагается, завербованные казахстанской разведкой и помогавшие следить за Рахатом Алиевым. Казахстан обвинения отрицает.
Kazakhstan Intelligence Services Deny Austria Spy Allegations
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AFP)--Kazakhstan's intelligence services Wednesday denied any connection with a pair of Austrian police officers accused of hunting down the fugitive ex-son-in-law of the central Asian state's president.
Austria's interior ministry confirmed Tuesday that the pair were suspected of using a police database to find the address of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's former son-in-law Rakhat Aliyev, said to be living there.
"We didn't send anyone to Austria, and we have absolutely nothing to do with this affair whatsoever," Kenzhebulat Beknazarov, a spokesman for the Kazakh special security services, told AFP.
Austria hasn't sent Kazakhstan any official documents regarding the affair, he said, but he didn't rule out the possibility that "this scandal was fomented by that man," meaning Aliyev himself.
When he married into Kazakhstan's first family, Aliyev gained access not only to the country's dominant political party, but also the family's vast holdings in oil, banking and the media.
Tipped by some to be the next leader of the country, Aliyev rose quickly to become a deputy foreign minister and secured extensive business holdings.
But in 2007 things began to go seriously wrong after internal family squabbling and Aliyev was dispatched to become ambassador to Austria - widely viewed here as a kind of gilded exile.
He has since been tried and convicted in-absentia on a wide range of charges, including kidnapping and an attempted coup, and faces more than 40 years in prison if returned.
Austria denied an extradition request in 2007, ruling that he wouldn't receive a fair trial.
In January, another policeman was convicted by an Austrian court on charges of spying for Kazakhstan.
