I was tasked with doing AFV recognition once upon a time. Being by nature an anally-retentive detail freak, I put together a whole six-hour vehicle ID class that had my victim's eyes glazed over inside of the first 15 minutes. Had the entire process of identifying the then prevalent models of Soviet tanks down to a flow-charted if-then kinda thing, and made it dirt simple, or so I thought. Hell, I even had models, and everything. For the final practical exam, I had the guys try to ID the tank models set up in little diorama scenes. Pass rate? About 10%.

My company First Sergeant came to observe my class. Midway through the first iteration, on a break, he rather gently questioned me as to whether the guys on the 90mm recoilless team really needed to know the main gun bore size of the various Soviet tanks, or what kind of engine they had. It wasn't as if they were going to be able to walk up to the muzzle of the tank's gun, and break out a micrometer, or stick a dynamometer to the engine, now was it?

I didn't get the point, then, but I long after suffered an epiphany: That level of detail is really only of use to someone who's doing intel analysis and order of battle work. At the sharp, pointy end, all you need to know is if it's enemy, or not. If it is, shoot at it. If it isn't, don't. Whether or not it's a T72 or a T80U is immaterial to you as the guy with an anti-tank weapon... It's a certainty that it's immaterial to the guy in the tank turret, deciding whether or not to run your ass over as you stand up with the LAW.
Ключевая фраза "Whether or not it's a T72 or a T80U is immaterial to you as the guy with an anti-tank weapon.".

б)Насчёт стрельбы различными снарядами по различным видам вражеских танков "Back in the bad old days of spin stabilized sabot, it was considered relevant because we didn't think that we would be able to take out T72's with sabot at combat ranges. The theoretical plan was to fire sabot at T54/55 and T62's but use HEAT on the T72's. I never did figure out how we were supposed to tell the difference in the heat of battle at 2000+ meters, they look awfully similar when moving quickly over broken terrain through shifting smoke. Had the real war ever started, I planned to use sabot on all tank targets for my (undoubtedly rather short) defense of the Fulda Gap." Краткое содержание - предлагалось использовать обычные бронебойные по Т54-62, и кумулятивные -по Т72. На практике человек не брался их различить, поэтому собирался умереть, стреляя подкалиберами по всему, что видит.
