First versions of T-64 had a solid-cast armoring of hull and turret. But for all that the counter-HEAT effects protection level was insufficient.
The second modification of the tank already had combined protection. Hull front was composed of three components: RHA + glass-reinforced plastic + RHA. Turret had a cast main armour from half-hard steel with a cavity filled by cast aluminum alloy. This modification was short-lived because of large thickness (about 600mm).
The following modification of the turret also had a cast main armour which cavities were filled by inserts from high-strength steel. The thickness of this turret were reduced near to 400mm however survivability (ability to provide protection at multi-hitting) was insufficient.
Final modification of the turret which was manufactured as long as the tank was produced had ceramic spheres casted into cavities.
And the hull had not other modifications.
