"He was reported as being killed on 13. January 1943, but this was a mistake, and he was soon after listed as missing in action. He was in fact captured by the Russians near the Donez on 13. January 1943 and was sent to various POW camps (Krasnogorsk, Jelabuga etc.). His 14.PD comrades captured at Stalingrad in late January 1943 were very surprised to see Hassel in captivity."
