Jane's Missiles & Rockets:

Azerbaijan unveils improved anti-tank capabilities

Grzegorz Holdanowicz

Azerbaijan unveiled a wide range of new anti-tank capabilities developed over the past three years on 24 June.
Its updated arsenal includes man-portable, vehicle-borne and helicopter-launched anti-tank weapon systems, imported from Israel and Ukraine.
During a visit to a military exercise by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, the Azeri Land Forces displayed the Skif system with the R-2 missile with a range of 5 km. A joint development by Ukraine and Belarus, it was presented in the man-portable version.
The KBP Kornet-E missile system was shown mounted on an Israeli AIL Sufa 3 (Storm III) all-terrain armoured vehicle, based on Jeep J8 with Plasan Sasa armour, but no details about the contract have been released.
Azerbaijan is known to have procured an unspecified number of Rafael's Spike-LR system for land units, but reports that the Spike-ER missile had been adopted for the Mi-24 assault helicopter were denied by an anonymous, but well-placed source.
Also there is no evidence as to the truth of reports that Denel's Ingwe system had been procured by Azerbaijan. Denel Dynamics stressed it cannot comment on any contract unless a client releases the information.
Azerbaijan has also unveiled an improved 9P135 launcher for 9K111 Fagot/9K113 Konkurs (AT-4 Spigot/AT-5 Spandrel) family of missiles. This incorporates a new Elbit Systems add-on thermal imaging unit that improves the system's night and adverse-weather capability.
The Azeri Air Force showed a much-improved variant of its Mi-24 assault helicopter. It is designated Mi-24G (G for Gecæ, which means 'night' in Azeri) and is ready for day/night operations. The upgrade package had been tailored for the Azeris by South African Advanced Technologies and Engineering (ATE) Group on basis of the latter's Mi-24 SuperHind Mk IV NATO-compatible package developed under the SOVA designation for a Bulgarian programme in 2005.
To judge from photos released after Aliyev's visit to the exercise, at least two Mi-24Gs had been delivered to the customer. According to available data, Azerbaijan Air Force and Air Defence operates about 15 Mi-24s from the Baku Kala airbase.
Ukrainian Aviakon Aircraft Repair Plant in Konotop participated in the upgrade, providing overhaul and mechanical modifications, as well as supporting the certification process. The contract between Azerbaijan Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Aviakon was reported in the press in January 2007.
The Mi-24G retains the capability to launch 57 mm S-5 and 80 mm S-8 unguided rockets. It was shown with the new Baryer-V system that provides a semi-automatic command to line-of-sight (SACLOS) capability for laser-beam command link guided R-2V missiles, developed by Ukrainian State Kyiv Design Bureau "Luch". Baryer-V was originally created for the Ukrainian Mi-24 upgrade programme and was developed and tested by Aviakon in partnership with French companies. Azerbaijan is the first known export customer.
The R-2V missile has a range of 7,500 m. Its tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead is capable of penetrating more than 800 mm of ERA-protected armour. The hit probability of a first missile is claimed to be 0.7-0.85.
As part of the upgrade, the Mi-24G has received an advanced man-machine interface with large colour multifunction displays from Thales, which has also provided a head-up display, colour moving map and control display unit.
The helicopter is also fitted with an IST Dynamics high-rate-of-slew undernose gun turret armed with Vector GI-2 20 mm x 139 mm rapid-fire dual-feed automatic cannon. This is aimed using the forward-looking infrared/TV sight, the helmet-mounted sight or the pilot's head-up display.
A Cumulus electro-optical targeting and surveillance system has been installed as part of a fully compatible night-vision goggles (NVG) cockpit, while NVG-compatible formation lights have been provided for night-formation flying.
Other changes include the installation of NATO-compatible radios and 'identification friend-or-foe' systems, an advanced modular mission computer and a hybrid Doppler/GPS navigation system.
