Later that night, during the battalion’s attack on the town, May led his platoon across open country and through five wired obstacles. These had to be negotiated in complete silence. When he was within 30 yards of the gun emplacement, he called for rapid fire, shouted to his platoon to follow him and charged straight into the German fortified position.
The enemy was stunned by the sudden uproar. The first German that May saw had his fingers in his ears and his head in a compost heap. May’s training had not covered this situation, and he did not know whether to shoot him or run him through with a bayonet. In the event, he simply tapped him on the helmet and said “Oi!”
May captured the gun and killed or captured the crew together with an armoured car before leading his men on to the final objective. He personally disposed of six of the enemy and his small force took 43 prisoners. He was awarded an immediate MC.
