The Chinook, which was operating out of Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan, was critically damaged while attempting to land during night operations in circulating sand induced by the rotor downwash. This obscured the pilots' view, causing them lose visual reference with the terrain. The helicopter then made a hard landing and rolled over, ending up on its side.
Four personnel on board were said to have been injured in the accident.
