"In a conference with Hitler on 6 and 7 May 1942, an investigation was demanded to determine as far as possible, if the frontal armor of the Sturmgeschutz could be increased to 80 mm. Hitler further demanded an accelerated investigation to determine if, as an interim measure, the frontal armor could be reinforced to a total of 80 mm by welding on additional armor plates.

Target Order Nr.8 dated 20 June 1942 specified: Sturmgeschutz with 7.5cm StuK 40 are to be delivered with 30 mm supplemental frontal armor. Deliveries of Sturmgeschutz with reinforced frontal armor will begin with 11 in June and continue from July with all further Sturmgeschutz produced".
