А SM-3 Block IIA не сможет сбивать DF-21D?

Press Conference by Defense Minister Iwaya
08:45-08:57 March 22

Question:
Concerning the ballistic missile interceptor (SM-3 Block IIA) system that is being developed jointly by Japan and the U.S., there are some reports saying that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is doing interception tests in order to see if this system will be able to be usable for intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from next year. Have you received information or communication from the U.S. on that? As this is a joint development project, is Japan also involved with those tests?

Minister:
I acknowledge that such reports exist. Within the Missile Defense Review (MDR) released by the DoD in January this year, it was stated that tests will take place within 2020 on whether SM-3 Block IIA, which is being developed jointly by Japan and the United States, could possibly intercept ICBMs. I understand that conversations are already underway within the U.S. Government on the exact content and schedule for those tests. This involves our relationship with the U.S., so I would like to refrain from answering. In any case, Japan also intends to introduce the SM-3 Block IIA system. I hope to continue to thoroughly pursue necessary collaboration with the U.S.
