The tour that went disastrously wrong
By Margot Dudkevitch
JERUSALEM (October 20) - Shosh Shilo of Kedumim said that the trip to Mt. Ebal had been arranged by community resident Lt.-Col. (Res. ) Nehemia Perlman, who organizes many trips, and that permission was received from the army a day or two before the trip.
Accompanied by four IDF soldiers, the group of forty set out from Kedumim at 9:30 a.m. in a bulletproof regional council bus heading for Shavei Shomron, before turning toward the mountain, Shilo said.
At approximately 1:30 or 1:45, Kedumim residents heard what had happened and immediately set up emergency teams to contact the authorities and maintain contact with the stranded settlers.
OC Central Command Maj.-Gen. Yitzhak Eitan said that as soon as the army received a report, a large number of troops were deployed to the area, including two combat helicopters, a helicopter rescue team, and a large number of troops.
The group was scattered in different areas, exposed to the Iskar refugee camp and Palestinian fire, Eitan said.
Judea and Samaria Commander Brig.-Gen. Benny Ganz personally supervised and took part in the battle that raged between IDF soldiers and Palestinian security officials and armed Tanzim militiamen. Throughout the afternoon, several members of the group managed to hold brief conversations with the media on their cellular phones.
Toward 4:30, two of the seriously wounded Israelis were taken to a more sheltered area 100 meters away, where they were tended by medics. At 5:15, tanks and half tracks were sent to the area.
At 6 p.m., the Council of Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza declared that the IDF had not yet been able to retrieve the wounded from the site. At approximately 6:45, the IDF called on Iskar residents to leave the village.
By 7:30, IDF troops succeeded in rescuing 30 of the travellers, including the four injured, two babies, and eight children. At 8:53, Magen David Adom transferred two of the less seriously injured to hospital.
At 960 meters, Mt. Ebal is the highest lookout point in Samaria. Also known as the Mountain of the Curse, the mountain has attracted a steady stream of visitors as the site of Joshua's altar.
Ruins at the site were identified as Joshua's altar by Prof. Adam Zertal, who conducted excavations there in the 1980s and 1990s.
The excavations, in which piles of bones of kosher animals were found, were carried out with the help of numerous volunteers and financial help from the Council of Jewish Settlements in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, which has promoted the area as a tourist site and organized tours there. The mountain offers a panoramic view of the entire surrounding area.
