Denmark donates eight mln dlrs worth of arms to Lithuania
VILNIUS, Sep 25 (AFP) - 16:07 GMT - Aspiring NATO member Lithuania on Wednesday
received eight million euros (dollars) worth of artillery and other military
equipment, the Lithuanian defence ministry reported.
Lithuanian defence minster Linas Linkevicius officially received the materiel at the
Klaipeda port cotyu.
"The shipment includes 70 pieces of artillery, 130 pieces of artillery transport,
ammunition and other military equipment," Rita Grumadaite, defence ministry
spokeswoman told AFP.
The artillery will go to a special brigade so that it can prepare to act under NATO
standards, while the rest of the arms will be distributed among other military units,
Grumadaite added.
Denmark's assistance programme also provides for 70 Lithuanian officers to be
trained under a special programme in Denmark.
Denmark is one of the most active supporters for the Baltic state of Lithuania,
Latvia and Estonia to join NATO.
All three Baltic states hope to receive an invitation to join NATO at a summmit in
November in Prague.
