Since 1986, AeroVironment has been developing small unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) for use in military surveillance, law enforcement, and civilian rescue efforts. In addition to the Black Widow, AeroVironment has developed the Pointer, a hand-launched, remotely-piloted, 10-pound electric aircraft for remote monitoring and surveillance.
Another miniature flying vehicle, an ornithopter dubbed Microbat, is in development. In its final form, Microbat is expected to weigh less than 15 grams, including controls and a miniature camera with down-link capability.
