German Red Square Pilot Rust Fined for Shoplifting
Reuters April 17, 2001
HAMBURG, Germany, April 17 (Reuters) - Mathias Rust, who eluded Soviet air defences to land a light aircraft in Moscow's Red Square in 1987, was found guilty by a German court on Tuesday for stealing a pullover from a department store.
A spokeswoman for the Hamburg district court said Rust had been fined 10,000 marks ($4,500) for the theft.
The fine is not Rust's first brush with the law since he was widely feted in the West for flying his plane into the centre of Moscow, triggering a purge of the Soviet armed forces.
A Hamburg court sentenced him to two and a half years in jail in April 1991 for stabbing a girl who refused to kiss him.
The judge then said he had handed Rust a relatively mild sentence because his experience in a Soviet jail had a traumatic effect on the young man.
Rust, who was only 19 when made the daring flight, said the stunt was intended to promote world peace. Soviet authorities sentenced him to four years in a labour camp but released him after 432 days following an appeal by former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
