The genesis of the Carnatic wars are generally attributed to ambition of Joseph François Dupleix.The Governor of the French East India Company, Joseph François Dupleix, sought to establish a French colony in India. Immediately upon his arrival in India, he organized Indian recruits under French officers for the first time. The British and French went to war over the succession to the throne of Austria, as well as to expand their colonies in the Americas. It is pertinent to note here, that the trading companies of both countries, that is Britain and France, were maintaining cordial relations among themselves in India whereas their parent countries were bitter enemies on the European continent. Dodwell writes, "Such were the friendly relations between the English and the French that the French sent their goods and merchandise from Pondicherry to Madras for safe custody."[1]The Mughal power was on decline in India. It provided an opportunity for the contending European trading companies to venture out for brazen use of intrigues for obtaining hold over the land for the benefit of their respective companies. By that time, French and British trading companies had major presence among all the European companies trading in India.

Ну это понятно..))) Британцы там мирно гуляли, и гербарии собирали.))))
Со стороны Франции помимо всего прочего видится желание обезопасить Кромандельский берег (на юго-востоке Индостана), который непосредственно граничит с Карнатакой. А вот со стороны англичан... Что же их так увлекло, что они резко начали открывать свои фактории вдали от столь любимой Бенгалии?

Sa réputation lui procure en 1742 le poste de gouverneur général de tous les établissements français de l'Inde. Son ambition désormais est d'acquérir pour la France de vastes territoires en Inde. Profitant de l'anarchie produite par la dissolution de l'empire moghol, il voulut faire une puissance territoriale de la Compagnie, qui n'avait été jusque-là que commerçante, et projeta ce que réalisera la Compagnie anglaise des Indes.

À cet effet, il entre en relations avec les princes locaux, et adopte un style de splendeur orientale, dans son costume et son cadre de vie. Les Britanniques en prennent ombrage. Mais le danger pour leur propre expansion et leur pouvoir en Inde est partiellement évité en raison de la jalousie amère réciproque entre Dupleix et La Bourdonnais, gouverneur des Mascareignes: l'île de Bourbon (de nos jours la Réunion) et l'Île Maurice.

Quand la ville de Madras capitule devant les Français en 1747, Dupleix s'oppose à la restitution de la cité aux Britanniques, violant ainsi le traité signé par La Bourdonnais, moyennant de fortes sommes (1746).

Il envoie alors une expédition contre Fort St David (1747), qui est défaite dans sa marche par le nawab d'Arcot, l'allié des Britanniques. Dupleix réussit à vaincre le nawab, et à nouveau tente la capture du Fort St David, en vain. Une attaque à minuit sur Gondelour est repoussée, occasionnant de grandes pertes.

Dans la guerre qui s'ensuivit, il montra courage et talent, et défendit pendant 42 jours Pondichéry contre une flotte britannique formidable et contre une armée de terre. En 1748, Pondichéry est assiégé par les Britanniques, mais, au cours des opérations, des nouvelles arrivent concernant la paix conclue entre les Français et les Britanniques à Aix-la-Chapelle.

After the British initially captured a few French ships, the French called for backup from as far afield as Mauritius, and on 21 September 1746, they captured the British city of Madras. Among the prisoners of war was Robert Clive.

With the termination of the War of Austrian Succession in Europe, the First Carnatic War also came to an end. In the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle (1748), Madras was given back to the British , in return for the French fortress of Louisbourg in North America, which the British had captured.
